Siemens Gamesa 21.5MW new offshore model off the Assembly line!

A Danish media revealed that the first model SG DD-276 Siemens latest 21.5MW offshore wind turbine, is being installed in Denmark, the latest Siemens Gamesa unit, the capacity will break the European record, is expected to become the world's largest wind turbine outside of China.

The test prototype nacelle and hub installation is nearly complete, and on January 30 the last wind turbine blades were transported to the unit test center for final installation. The unit has an impeller diameter of 270 to 280 meters, a single capacity of up to 21.5 megawatts, and an estimated nacelle and hub weight of about 1,000 tons.

According to the EU release, the development work of Siemens Gamesa's ultra-large single-capacity offshore wind power prototype has started in April 2024, and under the project partially funded by the EU, Siemens Gamesa will build and install new wind turbines for testing by December 31, 2024. In addition to careful testing of prototypes, the HIPPOW project, dedicated to the development of large 21MW wind turbines, showcased innovations implemented by Siemens Gamesa in the product and installation process, including power ratings, bearings, electrical systems, blade and tower installation, cooling systems, and maintenance strategies. The project will also provide more efficient, reliable and cost-effective solutions.

Siemens Gamesa has increased its single-unit capacity to 21.5MW, a significant increase in size and complexity over the 14MW models previously launched. The design power of the new unit has been increased by 50%, and the sweep area has been increased by 37%. This innovation is expected to increase annual energy production (AEP) at the same location by 30-35%, transforming the offshore wind production landscape.

According to Danish regulations, wind turbines with an impeller area of more than 5 square meters must have a valid certificate to meet strict safety and design standards. The certification of the Siemens Gamesa 21.5MW unit has allowed Siemens Gamesa to further develop the aircraft and refine its performance until 2027 before considering full commercial deployment.

The development of SG DD-276 is designed to meet the growing demand for large wind turbines in the offshore wind market. The 21.5MW stand-alone capacity also makes it possible to remain competitive with some of the current heavyweights in the industry.
